Know About Purnima

You must be wondering what the meaning & significance of Purnima is? Why is it given more importance in Vedic astrology?

Purnima is known to be the day of the full moon.

A Thithi is a relationship between the sun and the moon. For every 12 degrees, the moon moves away or towards the sun it constitutes a Thithi. In a lunar month, there are two sets of Thithis, one starting from Amavasya till the Chatudashi or Purnima. As the moon slowly starts moving away from the sun, it is said to create a new Thithi. Every 12 degrees move causes a change in the Thithi. When the sun is diagonally opposite the moon the moon is visible on the earth in full which is known as the Purnima. So, from Amavasya, we see the waxing or the rising of the moon which constitutes the days of the Shukla Paksha, and the other half after Purnima we see the waning of the moon which is the Krishna Paksha.

Purnima refers to the night of the full moon. It takes the moon a few days to come to its full shape. And every month, a day falls when the moon comes to its full shape. And that night is said as the night of full moon & Purnima.

According to Hindu Culture & Vedic astrology, Purnima is the most auspicious occasion or day. And they believe that the night of the full moon or Purnima marks a positive note.

Many people practice fast on the night of Purnima & pray to god for bringing good fortune & positiveness into their lives. Some people also say that fasting in full moonlight uplifts their mind & body spiritually on a positive note. Additionally, there are other benefits associated with it as well.

Apart from this, the day of Purnima is considered the most auspicious muhurat to initiate anything new or any new ventures.

This first day or Ekam - we see a small portion of the moon, a little more on Dwitiya, and so on. This continues as an eternal cycle for years and years. A Thithi is ruled by several parameters. These parameters just like those of the Nakshatras define the Thithi, give the identity of a person, and as a Thithi is a relationship between the sun and the moon, it also defines the relationship quotient around him.

Hindu astrology has given great importance to the Purnima. When we talk about Purnima, the deity that rules the day is the moon. The element associated with Purnima is water. For Purnima the planet is Saturn. Among the 5 divisions, Purnima falls in the Purna category.

Rituals of Purnima Vrat

The rituals of Purnima Vrat start early in the morning. Therefore, all those who practice fast or practice Vrat at the top of anything wake up early. The vrat starts early in the morning and ends late at night. After waking up, the followers take a bath to prepare themselves for spiritual practices.

As the vrat is all about fasting & being dedicated to the worship of the almighty, those who practice the Purnima vrat don't eat or drink anything. The fast ends late at night. But from the early morning till the late night, one is not allowed to eat or drink anything if one does the Purnima vrat.

However, you can also observe the Purnima vrat by practicing partial fasting if you can not practice complete fasting. In practical fasting, you are allowed to eat only one meal in a day & completely devote yourself to god. But remember, the one meal you take must be devoid of pulses & salt.

You can either take the meal at lunch or breakfast, but you can't take the meal at night in the Purnima vrat.

Then, once the moon gets eliminated, the devotees perform the puja by offering prayer to the full moon.
