2020 Purnima Tithi
Purnima is known to be the day of the full moon.
A Thithi is a relationship between the sun and the moon. For every 12 degrees, the moon moves away or towards the sun it constitutes a Thithi. In a lunar month, there are two sets of Thithis, one starting from Amavasya till the Chatudashi or Purnima. As the moon slowly starts moving away from the sun, it is said to create a new Thithi. Every 12 degrees move causes a change in the Thithi. When the sun is diagonally opposite the moon the moon is visible on the earth in full which is known as the Purnima. So, from Amavasya, we see the waxing or the rising of the moon which constitutes the days of the Shukla Paksha, and the other half after Purnima we see the waning of the moon which is the Krishna Paksha. This first day or Ekam - we see a small portion of the moon, a little more on Dwitiya, and so on. This continues as an eternal cycle for years and years. A Thithi is ruled by several parameters. These parameters just like those of the Nakshatras define the Thithi, give the identity of a person, and as a Thithi is a relationship between the sun and the moon, it also defines the relationship quotient around him.
Hindu astrology has given great importance to the Purnima. When we talk about Purnima, the deity that rules the day is the moon. The element associated with Purnima is water. For Purnima the planet is Saturn. Among the 5 divisions, Purnima falls in the Purna category.
