Importance of Masik Kala Ashtami
This is the day of the appearance of the Bhairav form of Lord Shiva. On this day, devotees fast and it is considered highly auspicious according to Hindu tradition. According to the Shastras by just seeing the deity of Kala Bhairav, and pooja can grant you all your wishes.
This day is also called Kal Bhairo Jayanti. To carry on this tradition, every month on this Ashtami in the Krishna Paksha, a fast is observed. Praying to this form along with Kali Ma form of Goddess Durga is considered highly auspicious.
It is said, if you have a hard time getting your livelihood, or one feels many problems in personal and professional life be it business or profession, problems in marriage, one may observe this fast to receive benefits and achieve their goals.
If you have access to a holy water body one must bathe in that water early in the morning.
One must offer water as ‘arg’, the person observing the fast should do a jagran and sing bhajans of goddess Durga and Kali and Bhairav nath. The bhairav Katha should be read. At midnight, one needs to blow a conch and do the aarti of the deity.
Our ancestors facing any problems also get relief by keeping this fast. They say that evil spirits and ghosts also do not come near.
Lord Bhairav and Lord Kalika are prayed together.
They say health, wealth and happiness is achieved by praying on this day. Lord Bhairav is generally happy by Tantric practices, hence, Bhatuk Bhairav Kavach, Kaal Bhairav Strotra, Bhatuk Bhairav Brahma Kavach is recited on this day.
You can keep a full day fast or you can eat only fruits and drink milk.
Story of the fast – ‘Vrat Katha’
According to the legend of Kalashtami, once upon a time there was a battle between Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and and Lord Shiva as to who is the most superior. The debate on this matter went on, so a meeting was held after calling all the deities.
The most asked question was who is the best? Everyone expressed their views and searched for answers, but Shiva and Vishnu supported that point, but Lord Brahma spoke harsh words to Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva got angry on this matter and Lord Shiva considered his insult.
In that anger, Lord Shiva took the Bhairav form. The vehicle of Bhairav avatar is a black dog. He has a stick in one hand. Feeding dogs on this day is considered good. This incarnation is no one but the as 'Mahakaleshwar', that is why he is called Dandadhipati. Seeing this form of Lord Shiva, all the demi-gods were terrified.
In anger, Bhairav cut off 1 out of 5 faces of Lord Brahma, since then Lord Brahma has only 4 faces. In this way, the sin of killing Lord Brahma came on Bhairav due to the beheading of LordBrahma. When Lord Brahma apologized to Bhairav Baba, Lord Shiva came back to his
Bhairav Baba got punished for his sins, so Bhairav avatar had to live like a beggar for many days. Thus after many years their punishment ends in Varanasi. It had a name 'Dandpani'.
